What is Corks for Kids?

A two-day dinner and wine-tasting event featuring winemakers from Australia, New Zealand and Italy, all to raise money for the North Carolina Children’s Hospital located in Chapel Hill. Last year, the event raised over $76,000 for the Hospital. Not bad for our third year, but we will do better this time!

Why is this important?

Her name is Lily Mae - my beautiful redheaded daughter. She and her Mom are alive today thanks to the N.C. Children's Hospital. And since my wife works there, I have gotten to hear about the other amazing things they do and the lives they touch. Kids come from all over the state to receive the best health care around - regardless of their ability to pay or the complexity of the care that is needed. But if it is the state’s Children’s Hospital, why do they need our help? Can’t they just go to the state for more money? If only it were that simple.

Certainly, the state provides a portion of the hospital’s budget. But that goes to cover the bare minimum – the basics that keep the lights on and the place running. What the state doesn’t do is provide the funds needed to attract world-class physicians and staff or to initiate innovative research and care programs. The challenge is to find a way that allows the Hospital to be innovative and develop programs beyond what's afforded from patients' limited insurance and uncompensated care to children statewide.

Simply stated, much of the additional personnel and equipment they need to develop new and innovative programs are not available from the financial resources they have. That’s where Corks for Kids comes in.
